Dispersed Life

Dispersed Bikepacking is a project by Katie and Andrew Strempke.

Our relationship with bikes was formed on a coast-to-coast tour from San Francisco, CA to Yorktown, VA in 2012. We didn’t know much about bikes, but we were intrigued with riding across the country. We had a lot of fun and learned a great deal about bikes and long rides. Quickly we got into cyclocross racing, road racing, and eventually gravel racing. In 2018 we toured the Great Divide route, see “Someday we’ll ride the divide” and daily posts from that trip on our blog. The Divide was pivotal for us, we returned from that tour with a new sense of awe for riding and existing in the mountains.

I started making frame bags for that trip on the Divide. The bags held up well and when we got home I was motivated to sew more. Soon all of our bikes had frame bags, and our friends’ bikes too. Now we entrust them with all our gear in the backcountry, whether it’s a burrito for a day ride or gear for racing the Colorado Trail.

Dispersed products are handmade in a small off-grid workshop at the foot of the La Sal Mountains. After living and sewing in our van for a few years we purchased land and built our own workshop because the van was overflowing! Our equipment runs on solar power and our post office trips are often by bike on a dirt road. We test our designs on multi-day rides and races to ensure they hold up on the most demanding routes. Living with backcountry trails at our doorstep provides inspiration for making quality gear.

Stats:  “What’s the maximum number of miles you think you can hike in a day?” I knew Eszter was brewing up some kind of a crazy trip that I’d no doubt say yes to because, as our friend Johnny says, I’m “just stupid enough.” Cautiously I told her I could probably do 20 miles of…

    Oregon Timber Trail Bikepacking Race

The Oregon Timber Trail is 669-mile National Scenic Route across the state of Oregon from California to Washington passable by mountain bike, foot, and horse. The route was on our radar based on high praise from Justin, who raced last year. His description of the route and comment that this should really be the third…
